Row n'Mine Tour
Friday October 1st to October 3rd 2010

Description

This tour, inspired by the Row ‘n Wine tour, combines fitness, fun, and cultural features. You will row beside beautiful fall foliage on the rivers, lakes, and bays of the Kamawaska waterway in the Madawaska Highlands. You will see remnants of a ghost town and the associated mine. You will visit the fascinating local museum and artistic studios on the occasion of the 19th Annual Madawaska Valley Studio Tour.

Tentative Itinerary

 

Fri. Oct. 1

Evening of Friday, October 1 -- arrival at waterfront cottages, Ohio Rd, Combermere

8 PM -- get-together and munchies

 

Sat. Oct. 2

8 AM – depart by car for Barry’s Bay

8:30 AM – unload boats and rig at Barry’s Bay beach

9 AM – row on the Bay, pass Ski Island, through the Narrows, skirt Mayflower Island in Kamaniskeg Lake, enter the Madawaska River (15 km)

12:30 PM – lunch at the cottages

1:30 PM – depart by boat (or road) for Mayflower Beach in Combermere

2 PM – tour of the Mission House Museum; see the Mayflower wreck video, and learn about the history of the Craigmont Mine

3:30 PM – visit Craigmont Mine, at one time the world’s largest corundum mine

6:30 PM – Dinner

8 PM – Campfire

 

Sun. Oct. 3

8:30 AM – row on Blackfish Bay

9:30 AM – derig and load boats

11 AM – visit Holy Icon Studio and see beautiful painted icons

11:30 AM – visit Whiteduck Pottery where Jamie & Linda Turnbull create hand-thrown ware for everyday use as well as one-of-a-kind pieces.

12:30 – lunch at the 528 Ohio Road

2  PM – visit Aquarose where Dave & Renee Paterson polish minerals and manipulate metal to create beautiful art pieces and jewellery

2:45 PM – visit the gift shop at the world famous Madonna House

3:30 PM -- depart
