October 1-2, 2022

Let’s round-up our touring season with a 2-day tour on beautiful, bucolic, Rice Lake, October 1-2.  It will be the start of our gorgeous autumn weather in Northumberland County.   There is room for 20 rowers and a commitment to rowing both days is required.

Southview cottages will be our base as we explore this 32 km lake.  We will rig on Friday evening and de-rig on Sunday afternoon.  Make time in your schedule to be on hand for this activity.

Degree of difficulty:  Intermediate, open water with some boat traffic.

Row:  We will row along the north shore towards Harris Island, and then cut across (the lake averages a width of 5.6 km) to the south shore for lunch at the village of Harwood.  The history and now sub-merged location of the Cobourg-Peterborough Railway will be explored after lunch, as we continue along the south shore.  At Black Island we will cut across the lake to Southview Cottages.  The distance will be about 25km.

On Sunday, we row south to the bottom of the lake, stopping for lunch at Rhino’s Roadhouse in Bewdley.  I advise caution, as Rhino’s portions are huge and we will still need to row along the south shore to Gore’s Landing before crossing back to Southview Cottages.  About 20 km.

If the lake is rough due to high winds on either day, we will scoot over to the mouth of Otonabee river and row to Campbelltown boat launch for lunch, then back the way we came.  About 22 km.

Note:  Toilets are available at the lunch sites, except for Campbelltown boat launch.

Accommodation, etc:  I have booked a block of cottages at the Southview Cottages, 875 Southview Dr, Bailieboro.  These sleep 4 to 5 people and are equipped with full kitchens for your breakfast preparation.   The configuration is one Queen bedroom, one room with two singles, and a pull-out sofa.  Once you and your room-mate(s) register I will ask you to e-transfer me the tour fee and your portion of the room rental.

It is expected that every person registering for this tour be able to verify that they have been double vaccinated.

The tour fee is $85.00 and the accommodat1on is $290 for the weekend with 5 sharing, $359 for 4 sharing.
